Description: Mining in NE Oklahoma left a legacy of open mine shafts, acid water and hills of contaminated waste. Water pollution and public health concerns led the EPA to list the Tar Creek area as a Superfund site in 1983. Replanting these forests and riparian areas will improve water quality and restore native ecosystems.
